The Extension Space Conjecture says that the poset of extensions of a rank r realizable oriented matroid has the homotopy type of an (r-1)-dimensional sphere. This is a very fundamental conjecture that nonetheless remains open. This talk will give an introduction to the Extension Space Conjecture, as well as other words in the first sentence of this abstract, and its current status.
