Grade Requirements
Minimum Grades
A grade of C or better is required in every math course for it to:
count toward the major or minor, and
satisfy a prerequisite for any subsequent course in the department.
A grade of C- or below does not meet either requirement, unless the course description states otherwise.
Retaking Courses
You may retake a required major course once to meet the minimum grade. No course may be taken more than twice. Students who fail to earn C or better after two attempts in a required course will be dropped from the major. Withdrawals do not count as attempts. Seniors may petition for an exception.
Other Policies
A Pass (P) grade does not count toward the major or minor unless Pass/Fail is the only grading option available, and even then requires department consent.
A student who has received credit for a course may not take one of its prerequisites for credit at a later time.

Major GPA Calculation
A GPA of 2.0 or higher in major courses is required for graduation. Here is how the major GPA is calculated:
What counts:
All MATH courses taken at Binghamton, except non-major courses (1XX, 220, 223, 314, 324, 327).
For Actuarial Science majors, required economics courses (Econ 160, 162, 360, 362) count when applicable.
If you take additional upper-level MATH electives beyond the minimum major requirements (including graduate-level courses), those extra courses count toward your major GPA. If DegreeWorks does not recognize them automatically, contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies.
What does not count:
Transfer courses are not included in the major GPA.
Courses taken with the S/U or P/F grade option cannot be used toward major requirements, even if you passed.
Retakes:
If you receive an F and retake the course, both grades count in the major GPA. Retaking may improve the GPA but does not erase the original F.
If you earn the minimum acceptable grade (C or better) and choose to retake the course for a higher grade, only the first grade counts because the requirement was already satisfied.
