I consider myself an academic mathematician, equally committed to mathematics education and mathematics research. The majority of the courses I have taught have been introductory courses (100/200 level), but I have had the opportunity as a postdoc to run upper level and graduate courses.
I am an MAA Project NExT Fellow for 2013-2014 (brown13 dot).
Laura Anderson and I have collaborated on “flipping” calculus at Binghamton University. As co-PIs on a SUNY Innovative Instruction Technology Grant, we've constructed resources which allow for calculus classrooms to be “flipped”. In the fall of 2013 we compared our six flipped classes against six control classes taught in the classic lecture style. The results of this experiment were favorable and have been submitted to PRIMUS. Beginning fall 2014, Binghamton University will be running all calculus 1 sections under our flipped model.
