We will discuss the structure and properties of polynomial functors (such as the k-th symmetric or exterior power functors) in a characteristic-free setting. An interesting application of this theory is the proof of a conjecture of Buchsbaum and Eisenbud on the structure of finite free resolutions of modules over commutative rings.
